JULIAN RIFKIN

PROVISIONAL PSYCHOLOGIST

Julian is a provisional psychologist with Bachelor Degree in Psychology (Honours) and Masters in Professional Psychology (with Distinction; Deans Merit list). He holds provisional registration as a psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

Julian has over 18 months of experience in counselling and assessment as a Provisional Psychologist and a diverse background working locally and overseas in the healthcare and medical industry for more than 25 years. Julian is an accredited Cool Kids ((treatment for anxiety in children and adolescents aged 7-17 years old, and their families) and Cool Little Kids ((for parents of children 3-6 years old who are at risk for the later development of an emotional disorder) provider and has comprehensive training in a range of counselling modalities. He has experience in administering a wide range of tests, including the WISC-V, WIAT-III and a range of cognitive, educational and behavioural assessment tools.

At PosAbility, Julian provides counselling services to children and adolescents from 5-18 years and consultation for families to support their children and adolescents to thrive. He has experience in supporting children with anxiety, depression, Autism, ADHD, low self-esteem, OCD and other mental health, emotional, social and behavioural challenges. He provides counselling to assist children in building resilience, emotional regulation, problem-solving, assertive communication and social communication skills. Julian also offers cognitive and more comprehensive assessments to assist in better understanding a child’s strengths and areas for development, as well as to explore diagnoses of Intellectual Disability, Specific Learning Disorder (Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia) and ADHD.

Julian embodies a holistic approach to psychology, blending clinical expertise with a profound dedication to community and family enrichment. Julian is dedicated to fostering positive change and specializes in supporting young individuals through mental health challenges. He adopts a child-centred approach and believes that a child’s capacity to face challenges builds with a strong sense of self and self-esteem.

In addition to his experience in the field of Psychology, Julian has many years of experience in working with children and families in a number of capacities within the sporting domain. He has extensive experience in representative sport both nationally and internationally as a competitor, state and national team manager (youth and adult teams), technical official, accredited swim teacher, swim coach and masters swim coach. Julian has embarked on a number of projects as an independent researcher, driven by working with disabilities and helping to improve the quality of life of people struggling with mental health challenges and developing positive change in people’s lives.

Prior to embarking on a career in Psychology, Julian has completed a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor Laws and worked abroad for 12 years in merchant banking, finance and law. When not working with children and their families at PosAbility, Julian continues to be an active member of the community and enjoys spending quality time with his family. Julian (married 44 years) has 4 adult children (career professionals) and five grandchildren (soon to be 6…!)
