BA (Linguistics), BE (Primary)
Primary Teacher and Special Education Consultant
Celeste first received a Bachelor of Arts (Linguistics) at UNSW, going on to work in media for 10 years. After starting a family, she discovered a keen interest in education, especially in the area of learning difficulties. Returning to Macquarie University, she completed a Bachelor of Education (Primary), qualified as a primary Teacher and began working in the field of special education, focusing on literacy.
Celeste worked for 10 years at the Redfern Tutorial Centre, first for MultiLit, then the Exodus Foundation. At the Redfern Tutorial Centre, she implemented intensive 20 week program literacy programs, aimed at children up who had fallen behind their peers in public, private and catholic schools in inter-city Sydney. While the program’s initial focus was indigenous education, the centre also successfully catered to the literacy needs of many children from disadvantaged backgrounds with a range of learning and behavioural issues. A majority of the students who graduated from the Redfern program achieved huge gains in reading, fluency and spelling, going on to successfully complete high school.
Celeste is currently undertaking her Masters of Special Education at Macquarie University and is working for PosAbility as a tutor, implementing individualised programs in literacy. Her interests and passion lie in the provision of quality, systematic instruction in literacy with a focus on improving the learning outcomes of students who may be struggling in the normal school environment.
